02

Appraisal & Authentication

One signed document carrying both a written authentication opinion and a USPAP-compliant appraised value: retail replacement value for insurance, or fair market value for estate, division, and private sale. From CAD $300 per item.
Why Hermès Only

One house, followed closely.

The practice is limited to Hermès, and no other luxury house is accepted. For several years I have advised a Hermès consignment store, which means handling the house's pieces closely and often; it is the one house I have chosen to study in depth, and the only one I take on. Following a single house, its boutique pricing as it moves, its seasonal releases, its authenticated resale market, is what lets an opinion rest on current, house-specific evidence.

For insurance, the number that matters is what replacement would actually cost. Boutique price, where the model is available at all, often sits below what replacement through the authenticated resale market requires; a replacement value report documents that difference for the underwriter. Standard contents coverage may not fully respond to a high-value piece; insurers ask for proof of value and ownership, and high-value items are often scheduled separately. For pieces bought on the secondary market, the appraisal also serves as the authenticity record a policy can rely on.

For estates, Hermès pieces are valued at fair market value, including as at the date of death where the assignment requires it. For separation and equitable distribution, the same discipline applies. For private sales, I advise on pricing against authenticated resale evidence, and take no part in the transaction myself.

An independent service, not affiliated with or certified by Hermès. Hermès does not authenticate items purchased outside its own channels and does not issue certificates of authenticity; documents issued by this practice express a professional opinion of authenticity, with its basis stated in writing.

Questions

Asked in every first call.

Where can I get an Hermès bag appraised in Canada?

I provide independent Hermès appraisal and authentication from Toronto, working with collectors across Canada. Reports state fair market value or retail replacement value under ISA standards and USPAP methodology, with reference to current Hermès boutique pricing and authenticated resale market evidence. Examination is in person across the Greater Toronto Area or by detailed photographs, and initial consultations are without charge or obligation.

What is the difference between authentication and an appraisal?

Authentication answers whether a piece is genuine. An appraisal answers what it is worth, and for which purpose: replacement value for insurance, fair market value for estate, division, or sale. They are different questions with different documents. Here they can be answered in one engagement, since the combined report carries a written authentication opinion and a USPAP-compliant appraised value in a single signed document.

Does Hermès authenticate bags?

No. Hermès does not authenticate items purchased outside its own channels and does not issue certificates of authenticity. Verification of secondary-market pieces is done by independent specialists. Documents from this practice state a professional opinion of authenticity, with the basis of the opinion set out in writing.

How much does Hermès authentication cost in Toronto?

A standalone written authentication opinion starts at CAD $150 per item. The combined document, which adds a USPAP-compliant appraised value for insurance or estate purposes, starts at CAD $300 per item. Fees are flat, quoted in advance, and never a percentage of value.

Do you take exotic leathers?

Yes. Crocodile, alligator, ostrich, and lizard pieces are accepted, for both authentication and valuation.

Can you work from photographs?

Authentication is strongest with the piece in hand, and in-person examination is available across the Greater Toronto Area. Where distance requires it, detailed photographs and provenance documents can support both an opinion and an appraisal; the report records the basis of examination either way.

Is this the same as a legit check?

That kind of check answers yes or no, quickly, from photographs. A written authentication opinion documents the examination, states the basis of the conclusion, and is signed by an ISA member whose reports follow USPAP methodology. It is a document an insurer, a lawyer, or a buyer can rely on.

Do you buy, sell, or consign Hermès?

Not as an appraiser. The appraisal and authentication practice carries no inventory and takes no commission, and the fee never depends on value or on a sale, which is what keeps it independent. I do advise a Hermès consignment store, so if you are looking to buy or sell a piece, I can introduce you. I will not appraise or authenticate a piece I am also helping you transact; the two roles are kept apart.
